Is contemporary art for the birds? Michale Scott seems to think so. In his series of new paintings at the Cole Pratt Gallery, Scott explores contemporary culture – including contemporary art – with a cast of chickens and roosters. If these birds of a feather flock together, it seems they do so in all too human ways, as we see in Elvis Steppin’ Out to Sow His Seed (pictured). Here a proud rooster struts his stuff as he warily surveys his domain. Behind him, what appears to be a portal to a sunny, green pasture turns out to be a landscape painting on closer inspection. The world of appearances can be deceptive if not treacherous, especially for chickens. Another of Scott’s subjects is a transvestite pullet named Miss Penny, a social critic traumatized by the sight of all those slaughtered fowl in Baroque still-life paintings. Out to avenge her ancestors, Miss Penny is a player in what Scott describes as a postmodern satire on postmodernism and "the way art is interpreted and fed to people by museum curators and institutions." Scott’s new paintings can be seen at the Cole Pratt Gallery (3800 Magazine St., 891-6789) through December. – Bookhardt
