The Sazerac Co.,
a New Orleans-based international distiller, won the 2000 Clear Choice Award
from the Glass Packaging Institute for the design of its Rain Vodka bottle.
The prize, in the Distilled Spirits category, came with a $1,000 prize to be
donated to the charity of the winner's choice. The Sazerac Co. is presenting
the money to the New Orleans chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation.
The Dog Owners Group Inc.,
or DOG Inc., recently sponsored a cleanup day for the Esplanade Avenue neutral
ground from the French Market to North Rampart Street, followed by a party for
dogs and their owners. The group says the cleanup is part of its goal to
enhance the French Quarter and surrounding areas through community service.
The Beer Industry League of Louisiana,
the political arm of the state liquor industry, has given lawmakers more than
$200,000 (plus free beer for their parties) since 1997 through the "Business
Affairs Research Program." The "research program" is actually a political
action committee that failed to register or report its contributions as
required by state law, say ethics officials. The industry has successfully
opposed tougher drunk driving legislation for years.
Louisiana state officials
need to do a better job instilling public confidence, according to a recent
poll by Southern Media and Opinion Research. The polling group asked voters why
they rejected the education tax hike known as the "Stelly Plan" in November.
Louisianians said they want to raise teacher pay, but after months of news
reports detailing questionable spending practices by elected officials, they
did not trust the state's leadership to spend the money wisely.
