The state Department of Transportation
is spending $1.5 million to outfit 26 intersections along Airline Drive with synchronized stoplights designed to improve traffic flow. The upgrade, estimated to take about 18 months, is welcome news to motorists who routinely endure Airline Drive’s stop-and-start pace.

Cox Communications Louisiana
has won the Nationall Cable Television Associa-tion’s "Community Spirit Award," which recognizes excellence in local programming in the areas of news, sports and/or public affairs. The national trade association said Cox "celebrates its community’s diverse culture through its programs featuring music, education and community issues."

U.S. Sen. John Breaux
calling the Clinton administration "overly aggressive" in regulating industrial emissions, is urging President Bush’s team to suspend a key regulatory tool of the Environmental Pro- tection Agency. The Louisiana Democrat wants EPA to stop requiring that plants and refineries obtain new permits each time they expand. Breaux’s action is a blow to Louisiana residents adversely affected by emissions.

The Senate Judiciary Committee
rejected a three-year moratorium on executions while experts review Louisiana’s death penalty system. The panel left the study in place while stripping the temporary ban from the bill. Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, proposed the moratorium in light of several incidents in Louisiana – one as recently as January – and other states in which condemned inmates were cleared of the crimes that put them on death row.
