Letter from the Front Lines

Ronnie Virgets joins the ranks of a locally based tour group as they revisit the landscape of D-Day.

The "D-Day to the Rhine" tour is designed by Stephen Ambrose, the University of New Orleans professor-turned-bestselling author, and is conducted by Ron Drez, a local Marine combat veteran. It is a tour of the thousand-told tales of the Allied victory in Europe: London-Normandy-Paris-Arnhem-the Ardennes-Luxembourg-the Rhine. There are 40 people on the tour, including two World War II veterans, and they are a tough audience. They are well-versed on the topic at hand and are looking for Drez to provide the sea beneath the sea. He can do it. He has interviewed hundreds of D-Day veterans for UNO’s Eisenhower Center archives and has the soldier’s grasp of these battlefields.

On this anniversary of D-Day, Ronnie Virgets tells of some of his impressions of the tour and the things it commemorates.
