It was booked too late to make Gambit's print edition, but let us be among the first to announce that the Hi-Ho Lounge has secured Australian pop vets the Lucksmiths for a gig this Wednesday night. Aside from the general responsibility everyone should feel to get out and hear good music as often as possible, the show is noteworthy for two less-obvious reasons: It's the Lucksmiths, and they're playing at the Hi-Ho.

The stories to dominate the headlines this past week were clearly the freeing of Jena 6 member Mychal Bell, the guilty plea of Jacques Morial, and the further downward spiral of the Saints as witnessed by the entire nation.
But looking through the clutter it’s clear that after a collective pause by the media following the slew of 2nd Anniversary coverage, New Orleans and the impact of Hurricane Katrina resumed it’s role as a nationally engaged subject. There was this profile by the Associated Press on why Lawless High School in the 9th Ward has been sapped by bureaucracy, the larger Orleans Parish public school system was profiled in the New York Times, and the Washington Post took another look at the mental health crisis in the city through the eyes of the suffering. A couple of days before the Saints/Titans game last Monday night, a friend of mine wanted to bet me $100 that not only would the Saints beat the Titans, but that he would give me 12 points as he thought that they would win big. Obviously, my friend drinks a lot of black and gold Kool-Aid. I have no idea why I didn't take that bet, but I'm wishing I had because proving him wrong again and winning a C-note would have been nice.

Katy Beh on Magazine will be hosting a trunk show for Toronto-based jewelry designer Anne Sportun, October 5-13th. Sportun designs her jewelry on the belief in the universal language of shapes and symbols.

Rouses on Carrollton

This Wednesday, Sav-A-Center on North Carrollton Avenue will become a Rouses Supermarket. Rouses, Louisiana's largest independent grocer, will acquire 17 Sav-A-Center stores, since the national chain decided to leave the Louisiana market.
Rouses prides itself on their Cajun specialties, including Turduchen, homemade boudin and cracklins.
