With Mardi Gras rolling fast and hard, it is easy, while living in the heart of New Orleans, to forget what is happening in the rest of the world. However, since I am the wimp of all wimps when it comes to weather, I have yet to venture out to see a parade.
This unwillingness to be cold or wet has given me the opportunity to catch up on my favorite past time. Surprisingly, this obsession of mine is with Awards Shows. Normally, I love them all. I am not a huge fan of the droning on of announcers or the sometimes unbearable acceptance speeches, but instead, I love to see actors dressed in their finest. Nothing is more satisfying to me than to see what beauty is cast upon the red carpets.
Of course, I skipped the Peoples Choice Awards this year. I mean, what is the fun in seeing Queen Latifah announce all of the winners from some soundstage? Only then to watch some boring pretaped acceptance speech from the actors, looking like they were just surprised by the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol. Even worse, this year, because of the writers strike, the Golden Globes were a total wash. Who is Billy Bush anyway and what convinced the higher-ups that he was the perfect man for the job of announcing the Golden Globe winners? It just goes to show that no award is truly that gratifying without visions of an Armani tux or a Monique Lhuillier gown to distract the audience from a really poor presenter.
This past Sunday night, when I could have been enjoying a parade, I finally got my wish. I was able to see Brad and Angelina on the red carpet. The Screen Actors Guild Awards went on without a hitch. No empty soundstages here! All the actors of television and movies were out decked to the nines. For me, it was pure Zac Posen/Armani/Hermes/Gucci/Nina Ricci heaven. [A little game I like to play with the awards shows is guessing who is wearing what].
The airing of a truly complete awards show gives me hope that the Oscars this year will have all the glitz and glam of the past. Hopefully, this can be accomplished while still satisfying the needs and wishes of the writers. Lets roll out the red carpet!
