The Real Reason D-West Doesn't Get Enough Love?

"Speaking of Favre, he already has been replaced by Tyler Hansborough as the token "White Athlete That The Media Openly and Embarrassingly Fawns Over Because of His Work Ethic and Love For the Game." (Note: Steve Nash was the overwhelming favorite here until Hansborough too over during the tournament.) For anyone who doesn't think there's a racial component to this, you're crazy. Just look at David West of the Hornets -- like Hansborough, he's a self-made player and a staunch competitor who plays with an inordinate amount of passion, an undersized forward who routinely scores on bigger bodies, someone who extracted every ounce of his potential and made the most of it. Well, have you ever read a David West feature? Have you ever heard announcers raving about him to the point that you wondered if they were related to him? No and no. I just think it's a little, um, peculiar. We'll see if this changes during the NBA playoffs." Bill Simmons, ESPN columnist.

Simmons maybe onto something about the salivating over Hansborough but D-West doesn't seem nearly as physical as Hansborough has to be (West's got a lot more touch to go along with his inside game). He is after all known by CP3 as the 17-foot assassin.

David West will never be appreciated by the casual fan because he's not very flashy and he doesn't care about being a star, kinda like Tim Duncan. West will get half his points on open 17-footers and also score a bunch on strong moves from the low block. Not very sexy, but 2 points is 2 points. It's rare that he posterizes anybody, and therefore he doesn't show up on ESPN and the likes all that much. Only true fans of the game really appreciate the talents of Big Easy D-Weezy.

Hmmm. Sounds like Hansborough is a lot like J.J. Redick. Everyone loved him in college, but where is he now? (Riding a bench.) One can only hope that if West continues to put up the numbers he is now that in time he will be every bit as appreciated as Duncan.

Good link. I watch all the games on League Pass (I live in Austin) and the announcers are almost always for the Hornets opposition. David West has this reputation for constantly whining to the refs, and it's fun to hear them poke fun at them and at the end of the game, voila!, he has 25 points.

The Big (Easy) Fundamental will get all of the recognition and acclaim he can handle if the Hornets go deep in the playoffs. This is the first time he will be a major part of a playoff team! Go hornets!
