Bywater Decadence

There is some serious cooking going on in the kitchen at the Country Club, a Bywater institution with a new restaurant I reviewed this week. Still, for those familiar with the Country Club, what may come to mind first is more likely to be the sun bathing, pool lounging and boozy gay social scene in the huge and lushly planted patio behind the club's 19th century house.

The restaurant functions as a different operation, however, and if you didn't know about the bathing club out back, which is run as a private club, there is nothing to give it away in the handsome dining roomsor the beautiful front porch (pictured above). For those as yet unsold on the idea that the address can be a serious dining destination, chef Miles Prescott has put together one of the more generous – alright, decadent -- wine and cheese pairings in town to lure people in.

Each Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the restaurant puts out samples of its dozen or so cheeses collected from the Uptown purveyors Stein's Market and Deli and St. James Cheese Co. At the same time, the bar serves up samples from any and all of the wines on its by-the-glass list. The price for both is $19 a person, and for that you can nosh and drink your way through the early evening. There is usually live music in the lounge as well.

Mulling the Playoffs: The REAL Basketball Jones Edition

Well, as real as "The Basketball Jones" can get. I mean, it is just a song, and a music video and Web site, none of which are really all that tangible in the "it's-in-the-room-with-me-and-I'm-asking-it-a-question" kind of way. But The Basketball Jones Web site is an excellent source for all things NBA and Tas Melas, one of the site's founders, is a great source for unique (if not a bit tardy) insight into the world of the Association.

For the record, I e-mailed the Basketball Jones guys the same questions I did everyone else on the Blogosphere Edition panel, but as I did not hear from Tas or J.E. Skeets for a couple of days, I went ahead with the other replies. Seeing as how I never set a deadline or anything of that nature, it seems unfair that I wouldn't post Tas' responses after him putting the time to answer them. With that in mind, I give you the full Q&A:

No Red Carpet Even for Gwenyth

Posted by admin on Wed, Apr 9, 2008 at 3:25 AM

I do not remember ever seeing The Good Night theaters. Nor, do I remember even reading about this film in any “Coming Soon” articles. The first time I even heard of it was in the video store. There it was staring at me from the shelves. It is surprising to me that this movie went straight to DVD because the cast consists of Gwenyth Paltrow, Penelope Cruz, Danny Devito and Simon Pegg, who is growing ever more recognizable. Oh, did I mention, The Good Night is written and directed by Jake Paltrow, brother to Oscar-winning Hollywood starlet, Gwenyth? The Good Night has the potential to be good (excuse the pun), but it just misses the mark of eccentricity and becomes essentially just plain odd.

The Freezers. That might be a good name for the Jazz considering how they chilled the Hornets into scoring just 66 points on 36.5% shooting tonight.

Molasses. That's a good name for the Hornets — at least on a night that they looked like they were wearing lead-based sneakers.

Going down this stretch run towards the playoffs, Tyson Chandler and Byron Scott have both talked about how these last couple of games work as conditioning for the playoffs. Well, the Hornets are getting one hell of a workout right now courtesy of the Utah Jazz. and were down at the half.

But let's get onto more important matters. Specifically, what do Jazz players think about their team's name?

"We actually had a discussion about this less than a week ago," C.J. Miles said. "If it started in Utah they wouldn't be the Jazz."

So what would they be if they did?
