Dave Cohen of WWL radio conducted an excellent interview with Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price this morning (their conversation is up on the WWL-AM website). This afternoon, he sat down with Cindy Chang of The Times-Picayune to discuss the matter further.
Since the Price scandal broke (and rebroke), Causeway Police Chief Felix Loicano has resigned along with a Causeway officer, and two more Causeway officers were fired. Both Cohen and Chang asked Price if he thought it was time he stepped down as well. His response?
Whoever is behind the Jim Letten for Congress hoax is at it again. This week, another round of postcards was mailed declaring:
Jim Letten is a native of New Orleans and has served as the United States Attorney since 2001 and he is now seeking election to the US CONGRESS.
WHY!!!
To continue his efforts to rebuild New Orleans.
To restore integrity to the Congressional Office.
To work with the local criminal justice and judicial system.
Beneath a photo of Letten a caption states: Yes, hes READY. Elsewhere, the postcard states, Congress District 2 Bill Jeffersons district. Letten lives in Metairie, which is not in Jeffersons district (although, by law, anyone living anywhere in Louisiana can run for any of our states congressional seats).
When another faux campaign flier came out several weeks ago, Letten dismissed it as a hoax and stated emphatically that he is not running for office. He says he also has notified the Justice Department that the campaign is a fake.
No doubt someone with a little political savvy (and moxie) is hoping to push Letten into the same trap that ensnared former FBI Special Agent in Charge Jim Bernazzani. Hmmm. Who might that be?
You could drag a thick novel to the beach this summer and ponder the great questions of what is man and what is his place in the universe? Or you could keep this gem in your backpocket and fill your spare time working through more practical issues. Like who would win a fight between Muhammed Ali and Bruce Lee? A fight between an artist and a critic? The lesbian of your porno versus the lesbian in your fourth grade class?
Grandmaster Flash will be behind the wheels of steel at the fest proper. But fans can get that old-school hip-hop flavor even without entering the Dome, starting tomorrow at the W Hotel at 10p.m., when the vinyl princess Spinderella (yes, that Spinderella) takes over the ones and twos at NewOrleansBlack.com's First Friday party.
Continuing the vintage vibe is a set of DJ appearances from Biz Markie, who's spinning Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at the Metropolitan in the Warehouse District. Friday night he's joined by local DJ Raj Smoove, as well as pioneering rapper MC Lyte, host of BET's Hip-Hop vs. America, who played Essence last year.
And you don't stop...
Recently resigned mayoral aide Kenya Smith, who was among those embroiled in the recent city credit card controversy, sure sounds like hes running for Congress against Bill Jefferson. He has been rumored as a candidate since news broke of his resignation, but he has offered no official pronouncements.
I spoke with Smith at length last night (Wednesday), and he says he has made up his mind but wont announce his decision until mid week. When I asked about the credit card mess and how he would handle it, he said he would have no problem addressing that issue. Other sources tell me that the infamous dinner at Mortons Steakhouse included a lot of local elected officials, some of whom might even be running for Congress themselves. That could make things really interesting.
Qualifying begins next Wednesday (July 9) and ends at 5 p.m. Friday (July 11).
The Times-Picayune reports tonight that beleaguered Mandeville mayor Eddie Price got the same special treatment that he did on the Causeway back on another occasion in 2006 -- complete with no sobriety test and a cop-chauffeur ride back to Mandeville City Hall.
Want to ask Price about his driving habits, or perhaps get a state troopers' perspective? You'll get your chance this weekend, as Price is scheduled to appear at the 30th annual Mandeville Seafood Festival, where he'll take a turn in...the Louisiana State Troopers' Association's dunk tank.
And we'll let you write your own jokes about "dunk tanks"....
