Kenya Sounds Like a Candidate

Posted by Clancy DuBos on Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Recently resigned mayoral aide Kenya Smith, who was among those embroiled in the recent city credit card controversy, sure sounds like he’s running for Congress against Bill Jefferson. He has been rumored as a candidate since news broke of his resignation, but he has offered no official pronouncements.

I spoke with Smith at length last night (Wednesday), and he says he has made up his mind but won’t announce his decision until “mid week.” When I asked about the credit card mess and how he would handle it, he said he would have no problem addressing that issue. Other sources tell me that the infamous dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse included a lot of local elected officials, some of whom might even be running for Congress themselves. That could make things really interesting.

Qualifying begins next Wednesday (July 9) and ends at 5 p.m. Friday (July 11).
