Mike Karney looks good going down the dark, dark tunnel that is training camp

Training camp is notorious for being a long, hard grind that players would generally like to avoid. With regimented schedules that last from the crack of dawn until close to midnight, most players find any way they can to break the tedium.

"As coach Payton says, 'At the beginning of training camp there’s not light at the end of the tunnel,'" fullback Mike karney said. "It’s a very dark, dark tunnel. I guess that’s about as best as I can put it."

That, Karney said, was part of the inspiration behind cutting his hair into an "old school" mohawk.

"Camp’s a grind," he said. "You got to have a little humor and I thought it would be fun. If anything I look at myself and laugh and, for anyone else on the team, they can look at me and chuckle."

So far Karney says that teammates have responded well to the hairdo and even said that some guys might be looking to emulate the Saints fullback. As to whether he was trying to imitate anyone himself, Karney said no and that he didn't know of any other NFL players with a mohawk, aside from possibly San Diego Charger Shawn Merriman (it should be noted that Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis is also sporting a similar hairdo, but he says he's balding). Karney said that the idea just came to him two weeks ago.

"I cut my own hair anyway," he said. "My fiance said, 'That’s a good Idea, I’ll help you do it.' She was all for it and I was all for it so she helped me cut it."

Everyone, it seems, is all for the mohawk. Here are two more pics from different angles, for your amusal:
