As the 6 p.m. curfew arrived in New Orleans Monday night, a crowd spilled out of the Maple Leaf Bar onto Oak Street. Inside, a couple dozen people had gathered to drink by candlelight. They were saving the small generator, which was chugging away dutifully outdoors, for the bare necessities: the jukebox (lit up in the corner and pumping out Bob Marleys Legend) and the coolers (from which bartenders periodically grabbed icy-cold Abitas). Every so often, plates of hot sausage, halved loaves of French bread and slices of cheese appeared on a community table. They were the work of AJ Mallory, Rebirth Brass Band alum and current member of the 101 Runners, who manned the grill out back. Eat your heart out, McNulty:
