It's a Great Day to Be Broke, Sort Of

Posted By on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 4:40 PM

So, in reading about the recent bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the sale of Merrill Lynch and the bailout of AIG this morning in the NYTimes, I've been thinking that I'm pretty glad that I'm broke.

I mean, aside from rising food and gas prices, I don't have any other major money worries at the moment. (Or maybe I do but I'm just too financially inept to realize it). The growing concern over money market accounts makes me pretty glad I have only $2.74 in mine, so I don't have to worry about what to do with it.

Likewise, I'm thinking I can probably afford to leave the $600 in my 401K exactly where it is, 50% in low-risk domestic mid-level funds (is that what they're called?) and 50% in foreign small-cap funds-- go China!

Plus, with my $27 checking account balance, I've got no worries about exceeding the $100,000 max limit on government-backed/FDIC funds should something happen with JPMorgan Chase -- go Chase!

Today I'm thankful for:

--My crappy salary that falls below the median range of 80% of the New Orleans population

--The fact that I'm not eligible for retirement benefits at my new job for another 2 years

--Living in a hurricane-decimated region somewhat immune to the nation's mortgage and foreclosure woes, where I can actually afford to buy a house in a recovering neighborhood at a historically low FIXED interest rate.

-- The Louisiana Citizens' Fair Plan insurance that will require me to get a government-backed insurance policy on said new house

It's a great day for broke folks, wallstreet suckas! Huzzah!!

But seriously, if you're really scared about what to do with your oodles of money, check out this NYT article, "Where to Keep Cash When No Investment Seems Safe."
