Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied.
He said his program would be voluntary. It could involve tubal ligation, encouraging other forms of birth control or, to avoid charges of gender discrimination, vasectomies for men.
Yeah, being accused of gender discrimination is really the biggest hurdle this proposal has to overcome. LaBruzzo may be kicking around fascist notions like eugenic sterilization, but you'll be hard-pressed to call him a sexist.
It also could include tax incentives for college-educated, higher-income people to have more children, he said.
Wait, what happens if their kids turn out to be... dare I say it?... poor and stupid? Of course, how silly of me, someone still has to mow lawns and bus tables, right Mr. L?
"What I'm really studying is any and all possibilities that we can reduce the number of people that are going from generational welfare to generational welfare," he said.
Gee, John, why not just shoot 'em? Nothing wrong with a little state-sponsored eugenics among friends, after all. If my brain was more useful than a book of wet matches, I'd have more to say on this. So please, folks, take the ball and run with it.

Obviously Mr. LaBruzzo is a graduate of our failed educational system. It would be nice if he'd direct his attention to addressing the root causes of poverty by supporting programs that would create pathways out of poverty. He might be amazed at just how much tax money could be saved if we invested in the future of our people rather than blaming them for our failures as a community. On the news tonight he talked about being intellectually honest ~ give it a try John.
Speaking in purely fiduciary, non-human, non-humane, non-Christian terms: some people tried to pick my pocket for $700 billion this week, and I suspect those someones had MBAs. Has anyone asked LaBruzzo if he supports giving those people tax incentives?
David, since the mid 1960's we have invested trillions of dollars in supporting programs, and more trillions in income transfers to create pathways out of poverty. What exactly do you suggest as an "investment" for the future? The reality seems to be that in spite of the best efforts of government and social welfare organizations there is no pathway for the dysfunctional to become functional in a post industrial society. It might make you feel good to claim these paths exist, but they have not as of yet been identified.
The path is real simple. All you need is a quality education and an equal playing field to find employment when you are qualified. It's says a lot about this country that a person can have an elected office and not know just how difficult these two things are for some people to have. I think people like Mr. LaBruzzo know exactly what the solution is but would rather come up with ideas like his because the biggest threat to their isolated way of living would be educating and empowering everyone enough to get out of their bad situation. God forbid that some of these people were successful enough to move out where he stays. It would be easier to just kill their bloodline and wait for them all to die off.
Yet, Cliff for decade after decade in spite of the myriad of programs and trillions of dollars spent to elevate generation after generation of dysfunctional people out of poverty it just doesn't seem to work. It is so simple but there is a giant conspiracy to keep the under privileged down. I suppose the Jefferson family was stealing millions from the Orleans Parish school system because they were working for this agenda that you have discovered.
otis: there are no references to race discrimination in the blog post or any of the comments. labruzzo is basing this discrimination on economics and education. i think it's referred to as elitism in some circles.
I didn't mention anything about race in my comment. You must be thinking race yourselves.
By the way John I blame people like the Jefferson family too. It's wrong to assume I am upset because Mr. LaBruzzo is white. He could have been black as tar and I would have said the exact same thing.
Clifton what exactly are the obstacles to a quality education in New Orleans? You claim the path is simple, and you blame America, people like LaBruzzo and the Jefferson family? What is to be done? The per capita spending in Orleans Parish is the highest or second highest in the State of Louisiana and the results are the worst in the state? So it can't be lack of funding and others do much more with much less.
Are you honestly saying that the schools in Orleans Parish have been on par with other areas? And why is this about Orleans parish anyway? There are poor people in all parts of this state. It's apparent from your comments that you understand that his plan was directed towards Orleans Parish. I think there will be much surprise if something like this went through and the figures for who fit into this category were made public.
WOW I can't believe this guy is brave enough to speak the truth instead of the lies everybody feeds on.Of course he will be shouted down and the poor will continue to suffer under the "system" He has an excellent idea.
"Are you honestly saying that the schools in Orleans Parish have been on par with other areas? And why is this about Orleans parish anyway?" You raised the issue of quality education as being the answer. We live in Orleans Parish, so I thought you might share your vision on how to solve the problem here. Since I anticipated moey being an answer, i pointed out that we get the worst results with the highest or second to highest per capita spending in the State. "Its apparent from your comments that you understand that his plan was directed towards Orleans Parish." I made no such suggestion. "I think there will be much surprise if something like this went through and the figures for who fit into this category were made public." I am sure the information would be public as it would involve state funding. What do you think would be disclosed?
Repeating: "Some people tried to pick my pocket for $700 billion this week, and I suspect those someones had MBAs. Has anyone asked LaBruzzo if he supports giving those people tax incentives?" Seriously. Those people seem to have college degrees. Does the senator propose tax incentives for the CEOs of Fannie, Freddie, AIG, etc.?
According to the most recent study, abortion is now fulfilling the eugenic vision of Planned Parenthood's founder,Margaret Sanger, and blacks are disproportionately getting abortions which reduces the black population. Given the data, I am curious to hear from those who oppose this legislation and yet support abortion. Isn't this the ideal Pro-Choice legislation? Why doesn't the ACLU celebrate this as an opportunity for women to make decisions about their reproductive rights and even profit from their choice? Also for those who advocate for population control to save the planet, is this not the kind of legislation you would like to have passed so we can reduce our carbon footprint?
