With the Hornets in Berlin completely obliterating the Wizards (it was 369 after the first quarter) I took some time to look at what German newspapers were saying about the NBA having pre-season teams playing in their country.
Turns out it's actually not much.
Of course, if I knew German fluently (like another language in the other country the Hornets will be playing in) the search would be a lot easier. But I don't, so I used Wikipedia's Berlin entry as a reference to which papers I should check out and it lead me to the "Berliner Zeitung" and "Der Tagesspiegel".
To my surprise, though, the New Orleans Hornets and Washington Wizards are small potatoes when it comes to sports news in that country (headlines consist mostly of soccer and Formula 1 stories). But I did find two relevant stories pertaining to the Hornets and the NBA and, thanks to Yahoo! Babelfish, I've managed to translate them in (hilarious) English.
The first story's translation is "NBA Star Guarantee Full Employment in Berlin". It took some careful reading, but I finally figured out that the story was talking about how Hornets starters would be getting significant playing time against the Wizards (maybe the Wiz didn't get the memo?). And there's also this amazing quote translation from Byron Scott:
The fans want not to nevertheless only see us sitting at the collateral line. Its coach Byron Scott stressed: We take the play seriously.
Yea, I totally see what he's saying.
The second article is an interview with "NBA Vice Boss" Adam Silver which quotes him as saying "The whole world is a market". The interview seems to be about the globalization of the NBA, but Babelfish was not nearly as effective in translating this page as the first one. To wit:
Are young people in the whole world basketball to thus play and on the television regard and then NBA Pullis buy?
We want that next Dirk Nowitzki the goal has of playing in the NBA. But if Madonna in Berlin gives a concert, she hopes nevertheless also that the people buy thereafter their music.
When do the Hornets come home again?
