The following letter included below from the president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacell, urges California voters to support the passing of Proposition 2 on Election Day-- and all other voters not in CA to support it anyway ( most of your food probably comes from that region anyhow).
If passed, proposition 2, called a modest proposal by the New York Times for requesting the most basic of humane treatment for animals, would prohibit the confinement of animals in ways that prevent them from being able to stand, sit, lie down, turn around and extend their limbs.
"The fact that such fundamental decencies have to be forced upon factory farming says a lot about its horrors. We urge California voters to pass Proposition 2. We urge every state to enact similar laws," writes the NY Times. You don't have to be a vegetarian or a bleeding heart liberal to support this legislation. As the NY Times aptly puts it:
"Americans are becoming increasingly aware of how and where food is raised. With that should come real concern. The mantra of industrial farming has always been efficiency, but efficiency has come to mean a pregnant sow millions of them confined in a gestation crate barely 2 feet wide and only as long as she is. It means veal-calves rendered virtually immobile in crates barely large enough to contain their bodies. It means endless rows of laying hens kept in battery cages so small that the birds cannot even stretch their wings.
No philosophy can justify this kind of cruelty, not even the philosophy of cheapness." Read the rest of this entry to learn more about Proposition 2 from the HSUS.
Hens jammed six or eight to a tiny cage. Animals with open wounds or body parts trapped in the conveyor belt. Workers twisting the necks of sick and injured hens, then throwing them while still alive to languish and suffer on dead piles.
Its beyond sickening. According to an undercover investigation released this week by San Franciscos KGO-TV and the group Mercy for Animals, all these atrocities took place at Californias largest egg factory farm over the last two months. This so-called farm, Norco Ranch, keeps 8 million birds in confinement -- about 40 percent of the caged hens in California.
It gets worse. This factory farm is overseen by MoArk, LLC, which happens to be the largest funder of the agribusiness front group fighting The Humane Society of the United States efforts to pass a measure called Proposition 2.
Ive written to you before about Prop 2 and our national campaign to pass it. If approved by California voters, Prop 2 will be the greatest victory for farm animals in U.S. history. It would ban the cruel confinement of hens in battery cages, pigs in gestation crates, and calves in veal crates throughout California -- and help improve the lives of 20 million animals. And a win in November will lead to nationwide reforms in how farms raise animals for food.
MoArk has a history of animal cruelty violations, and this is the latest example of appalling conduct by the company. MoArk and Norco together have funneled more than $850,000 into the campaign to defeat Prop 2.
Thats why Im writing you again today with this urgent request: Will you stand with us to ensure that companies like Norco and MoArk cant continue with business as usual in their factory farms?
Please make a special donation to the YES! on Prop 2 campaign today.
The opponents of Prop 2 have told us all along that they treat their hens humanely. I guess weve found out (yet again) what really goes on when they think no ones watching. To make matters worse, as you read this, ads funded by Norco and MoArk are being aired in California, spreading deceptions and lies about Prop 2.
To counter their scare tactics, the YES! on Prop 2 campaign desperately needs donations to keep our ads on the air through November 4. Dont let animal abusers win this Election Day -- were the animals only hope and we cant let them down. Please join us in making history. Donate to help pass Prop 2 today.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely, Wayne Pacelle
