There are dogs that seem to love being suited up in a costume, like my noble, mellow Labrador. And there are some that seem to regard such frillery as torture devices, like my gutter punk post-Katrina ground-score street mutt.
Dog owners who know their pet belongs in the first category will be out tomorrow for the Canine Costume Contest at the Riverbend pet store Canine Culture. There will also be trick-or-treating for dogs, which promises to be a biscuit bonanza. The event is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and proceeds from the $5 contest registration fee and snack and drink sales will be donated to the Louisiana SPCA.
Naturally, Canine Culture sells dog costumes, which pet owners in New Orleans have more opportunities to bust out than elsewhere. For example, the diminutive dogs pictured above were seen hitting the streets during the Mystic Krewe of Barkus. Even the dogs in this town have busy costuming calendars.
