The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced Trouble the Water is one of 15 feature documentary films advancing in the voting process for the 81st Academy Awards.
The documentary is based on the handheld camcorder footage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath as recorded by Kimberly Rivers Roberts. Without any transportation out of the city, Roberts and her husband Scott and neighbors took shelter in the attic of the couples Ninth Ward home as Katrina raged and the levees broke. The film has already won several awards including The Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
The academy will announce the final nominations on Thursday, January 22.
