The Saints have been quick to act this offseason to correct this past season's most glaring weakness: the defense. And HUZZAH! Look who they just hired! Gregg "The extra 'g' is for 'genius'" Williams will now be running the Saints' defense after a pretty disappointing one year stint as the Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive coordinator.

Stop the presses! Start planning the parade! The Saints have solved all their problems and will win the Super Bowl in 2010!

Gosh, I think I pulled something.

In all seriousness, the Williams hire comes as a mixed bag. On the plus side, Williams is a bit of a defensive mastermind who's coached a slew of top-10 defenses in Tennessee (where he went to the Super Bowl as defensive coordinator) and in Washington. He's also well renowned around the league for being a self-important asshole and had his rubbed some people raw in his career. In all fairness, though, being a self-important asshole is ranking slightly higher than incompetent douche with Saints fans right now.

Can Gregg "Don't forget the extra 'g' is for 'genius'" Williams solve all of the Saints woes on defense? Well, as he showed in Jacksonville, there's no guarantee that the Black and Gold will become the Iron Curtain overnight. But, as someone who watched Williams very closely while he manned the Redskins' D, you can bet that the Saints will become more disciplined, stingy and hard-hitting. All things they failed to be under Gary Gibbs.

Also, the big-name hire is also a clear statement by New Orleans that they are taking their defensive problems very seriously and after a exhaustive, months-long searh that measured up all the best and the brightestthey're throwing money at the biggest name out there.

Oh, and just in case this all goes horribly wrong (and it's the Saints, so why would you expect otherwise?) y'all should know that the domain is already taken.
