National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Tomorrow, as part of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., In This Together (ITT) , a local HIV/AIDS agency, is leading an outreach, awareness program, “Steppin’ Out for Ourselves.” ITT has organized a number of teams that will be located in intersections heavily traveled by African Americans in order to get the word out about HIV/AIDS in the African American community. Here are a few of those staggering facts:
- African Americans make up 12 percent of the U.S. population, but account for nearly half of all new HIV infections, and almost half of all Americans living with HIV;
- In Washington, D.C., a majority black city, one in 20 residents is living with HIV — approximately the same proportion of people as in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. One in 50 D.C. residents has AIDS;
- According to the Louisiana HIV/AIDS Surveillance Quarterly Report, in the New Orleans Region in 2007, 63 percent persons newly diagnosed with HIV and 68 percent of newly diagnosed with AIDS were African American;
- 59 percent of the 5847 people living with HIV/AIDS in the New Orleans Region are African American.
