David West doesn't like being the "center" of attention (get it?)

For those of you who missed it, David West was the featured guest on "Rome is Burning" yesterday (though it's completely understandable, Jim Rome is kind of an ass). West and Rome talked about, among other things, how the Hornets' All-Star forward has always liked having a low-key role on teams.

-

For those of you who don't know, West is among the most approachable and humble players around. He's not one to draw much attention to himself and has relished (and even welcomed) the role of being the Robin to Chris Paul's Batman. West is always willing to make sacrifices for the good of the team. Well, almost.

-

West made a different type of sacrifice in the Hornets' win over the Raptors last night: he gave up his regular position at power forward to play center in the starting lineup. It was a move that West wasn't too familiar with, as he admitted the last time he played big man was in college.

-

"Obviously that's not my natural position," he said after his 17 point, 10 rebound performance. "Coach [Byron Scott] just tried to change things up and have a more aggressive mentality out of the gate."

-

Though the strategy — put into place because of Scott's displeasure with the play of Melvin Ely and Hilton Armstrong — worked, West said he hopes he doesn't have to take on the role again.

-

"Naw, no, no, no, no, no," he said when asked if he'd like to play center again. "It's not something I hope continues."

-

In all fairness, West played fairly well when he did line up against the Raptor's big men. And while it is not West's desire to continue at the center position, Scott said he liked what he saw.

-

"We did a good job of trusting the offense and D-West did a great job of finding guys," he said.
