The Bulldog's Canal Boulevard location is open once again. The tavern has been closed since a fire broke out on its second floor in late November. The fire occurred during business hours but no one was reported injured, though it caused extensive damage inside.
Like the original Uptown location and its sister establishment Lagers in Metairie, the Bulldog in lower Lakeview has an enormous beer selection (with about 50 on tap) and bar food that can be much better than average. You can get burgers and waffle-cut cheese fries here, but also rice bowls with grilled fish and a respectable bowl of gumbo. This is also one of the mysteriously few commercial establishments in New Orleans that produces a jambalaya as good as the versions found at home or at outdoor festivals.
The Canal Boulevard Bulldog also sports a lush and comfortable beer garden.
