Wendy and Lucy

Posted by on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 6:32 PM

Wendy and Lucy premiered at Cannes in 2008 and became a critics' favorite. Wendy is traveling with her dog Lucy across the Pacific Northwest, heading to Alaska where she hopes to work in the grim but lucrative fishing industry. She's quiet but determined and living on the fringes of an economy in decline. The companionship of Lucy is one of the few comforts she has in her journey, until Lucy goes missing. Adapted from Jonathan Raymond's short story Train Choir, it's a bleak tale filmed in minimalist fashion by director Kelly Reichard. She finds both kind strangers and unforgiving circumstances as the film edges towards a staggering conclusion. The New Orleans Film Society screened the feature in its 2008 film festival. It returns for another screening 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at the CAC. Previewed in Gambit here.
