Mid-City Goes Green

This weekend, Mid-City will play host to a couple festivals of firsts.
City Park’s New Orleans Spring Garden Show (Saturday, April 4 to Sunday, April 5) holds the largest Louisiana green fair ever, with more than a dozen green-related nonprofits and 25 green vendors (greenvens?) taking part in Global Green’s “Build it Back Green” initiative. Local recycled arts and crafts vendors will have their wares on display, and the Botanical Garden hosts guest speakers from the LSU AgCenter, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and other like-minded organizations to discuss the green life in the house and home and beyond. Global Green’s free Green Guide, a list of green builders and distributors in Louisiana, will also be available to guests (and you can pick it up in this week’s Gambit, too). And, of course, you can peruse the park’s beautiful displays of plants and flowers.
On Sunday, April 5, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade presents the Earth Day Festival, the city’s first-ever festival of its kind, sitting pretty on the shores of Bayou St. John. The free fest kicks off with a citywide bicycle tour led by Crescent City Cyclists. Tour highlights: the city’s greenest buildings and most polluted hotspots. The fest itself features guest speakers from Louisiana's Green Future and Defending Louisiana, live music (Amanda Shaw, Country Fried, a Wild Mohicans festival-wide second line and more), recycled arts and crafts vendors, solar info, and a crawfish boil patron party.
You can access both via streetcar, so leave the gas guzzlers at home.
