Since the start of the Spring semester, a group of students at Loyola University have been manufacturing biodiesel. Hunter Fontenot, Michelle Chatelain and Brian Hays gathered used vegetable oil from the school's cafeteria for the project and are giving it away for free to anyone who'd like to give their diesel engine a green boost.
- The American Lung Association has gathered air quality reports for counties in each state, including every parish in Louisiana. Click here for the bayou breakdown. Suggestions to improve? Per the Web site: Drive less, use less electricity, etc. C'mon, Louisiana, it ain't that hard. Baton Rouge, you've got some serious work ahead of you.
- Carbon-free and eco-active record label (and New Orleans superfan) Green Owl visited New Orleans for a Ponderosa Stomp/Jazz Fest trip, offering a loving call for support on its blog.
- Mother's Day is Sunday: You may have perused Gambit's two-part gift guide, but if you're looking for more green options, the Sierra Club now offers giftable sponsorships (with some added mom-friendly lagniappe), or you can donate locally to a number of different environmental nonprofits. (Think wetlands restoration, parks and their respective campaigns, among others. Google will be your friend here.) You can also find some environmentally friendly and recycled gifts this Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the New Orleans Craft Mafia market at the Bridge Lounge. Still stuck? How 'bout a nice evening at City Park's Botanical Garden with live music and cocktails.
- Tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Alliance for Affordable Energy hosts its annual public board meeting with keynote speaker Shelley Midura, who will discuss energy policy and efficiency in New Orleans. Admission is $12 (includes food and live entertainment).
- Also tonight (at 8 p.m.), the Iron Rail screens The Garden, a documentary about the threatened community garden in South Central Los Angeles. Admission is free.
