Madrid Restaurant Reopens in Lakeview

Lakeview now has a new Spanish restaurant with familiar local credentials. Madrid Restaurant (300 Harrison Ave., 482-2757) opened last night, and serves dinner Monday through Saturday.

At the helm is Juan Hernandez, a native Spaniard who was chef and co-owner of Madrid Restaurante in Kenner. He ran the place with co-owner Juan Contreras from 2004 until Katrina struck. They parted ways after the storm and Contreras now operates the Mexican restaurant El Gato Negro near the French Market.

Madrid's menu of tapas and paella will be familiar to those who dined at the restaurant's first incarnation, though a liquor license is still in the works to allow Spanish wines and sangria to accompany meals. In the meantime the restaurant is BYOB.

The old Madrid was in a strip mall along a Kenner side street otherwise dominated by a Home Depot, but people still sought it out. This new version is in a former convenience store a bit outside the main Harrison Avenue commercial strip. Knowing how eagerly Lakeview people have embraced new, local ventures, I don't think it will take long for the neighborhood to find Madrid.

I am SO excited this restaurant has re-opened! It is AMAZING! It used to be located right next to my house and I almost cried when I found out it had closed.

Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience at Madrid. Thursday night about 8:30 p.m. The place was fairly crowded. It took over 10 minutes for them to acknowledge us standing by the front door. The place was very loud (a lot of echos). We were sat and it took over 10 minutes for the waiter to greet us. We ordered iced tea (which ended up being bottled tea for over $4.00/bottle) I had to ask 3 times for the tea and he finally brought it. The food really wasn't good. It was ok. I realize they were busy but everyones attitude was don't care. I was really dissapointed with the entire experience.

Waited 20 minutes for an acknowledgement of our presence. Then 10 minutes later, the hapless head guy seats two couples without reservations before us, who came in just five minutes before. It was so egregious that an existing table offered to finish their meal in protest and demand that we be seated with them. How about a goddamned list? We left and had a better tapas meal at Cafe Granada. Madrid had better service when the space was a convenience store.

the place has zero ambiance/noisy/cluttered/staff running around chasing their tails...lousy bland food. NO absolutely No service waiting 1 and 1/2 hrs for the appetizer that I had to demand be delivered..rubbery awful shrooms...no ice refill for the $4 tea/asked for bread 5 times never got it. left by cancelling order after almost 2 hrs. wait. BTW Harry Connick Sr came in 30 minutes after me got his appetizer and main course before I got the appetizer. I drove from the Northshore..how stupid am I??? They moved to NOLA from Kenner but quickly caught on to NOLA scene. Take care of the names and screw the nameless...was the worst food night I had in 70 years of world wide dinning place/staff/food SUCKS...

Awesome night out! I lived in Spain several years and it's definitely the most authentic Spanish food in New Orleans. I felt like I was back in Madrid. Great service!

Well, Madrid (juan Hernandez) just up and CLOSED. No notice. "Thanks" to all of Lakeview that has made him by disappearing. Lakeview people are very clannish and he will never get our support again.

Coming soon - EL GATO NEGRO
The closed Madrid will be the second location of El Gato Negro which is strange because the Velvet Cactus (huge mexican restaurant) just opened up next to Lakeview Harbor!
