Writing about musicians means you occasionally get to fulfill completely random fantasies e.g., a casual phone conversation with Cheryl James, aka Salt of Salt-N-Pepa. (Read Gambit's story on the group's Essence Festival reunion here.) I was all of 8 when "Push It" swept across the country in 1986, and one of my most vivid childhood music memories is watching that video for the first time, loving the synthesizer hook ("It sounds like a naughtier 'Axel F'!") and thinking, Jesus, one day I hope I understand what these lyrics are all about. Had James called me then, it's the first thing I would've asked her.
We just started performing again. Its been incredible, the turnouts. Im surprised that people still want Salt-N-Pepa the way that they do. Im so flattered and so excited about performing again. We did a show in Hawaii in an arena, and we sold it out. Were going to Toronto. Were just getting back into it. Weve structured a really great show full of all of our hits or as many as we can get in there. When I started putting the show back together, I was like, Wow, we had a lot of hit songs! I had forgotten. So were just hitting you with those hits, back to back to back. We have Spinderella with us, and she does a hot set. I think were going to do about 45 minutes. Im excited, because I didnt really realize how huge this Essence Festival was. Ive heard about it from year to year. On the show, we had the cameras follow us to New Orleans to do some disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina. We made a lot of friends, so Im sure theyll be giving us some love.
For once it's not Louisiana caught up in scandal
DATELINE MINNESOTA! As David Winkler-Schmit noted earlier, the proper term for former comedian-talk show host Al Franken is now Senator Al Franken. Update: Franken's challenger, Norm Coleman, has conceded.
DATELINE S. CAROLINA! For those who thought South Carolina governor Mark Sanford was (R-TooMuchInformationville) in his tear-soaked confession, wait till you get a load of this:
The governor said he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria Belen Chapur, the Argentine at the center of a scandal that has derailed his once-promising political career....
During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife.
In early 2009, after Jenny Sanford discovered the affair, the couple went into counseling. She has told The Associated Press that he asked her several times to visit the mistress and she refused.
Awk-ward. And Sanford's now gone from (R-TooMuchInformationville) to (R-FunnyFarmMaterial).
That's got to cheese off the poor editors at Runners World magazine, who must've thought they had an Alaskan gubernatorial scoop with their own Palin interview in the new issue. But Runners World has something the Vanity Fair story doesn't, and that's this:
As promised, here's the video for the Michael Jackson second line that happened on Sunday. Watch for the Rebirth Brass Band which kicked it all afternoon in the sco
News reports are starting to come out that the Minnesota Supreme Court has declared Al Franken the winner over incumbent Norm Coleman in Minnesota's legally-contested U.S. Senate race.
One of the consolations of hot New Orleans summers comes from fine-dining restaurants, which typically fill the steamy lull with specials intended to lure locals out of their shadowy dens.
The citywide Coolinary program of discounted prix fix meals doesn't start until August this year, but a few restaurants are getting a head start on their own.
One of the more of intriguing is taking shape at all three of chef Emeril Lagasse's local restaurants this week only. From Wednesday through Sunday (July 1-5) Emerils (pictured above), NOLA and Emerils Delmonico will each serve their own three-course dinner menu, each priced at $35. It's an All-American theme in honor of the July 4 holiday. Here's a link to all the menus, and here are some highlights:
"At Emerils: chicken and waffles, made with fried organic chicken, a sweet corn Belgian waffle, watermelon slaw and Crystal hot sauce syrup
At Emerils Delmonico: sausage-stuffed pork with butterbeans, sage and tomato jam
At NOLA: Abita strawberry lager-barbecued chicken breast with loaded potato salad and grilled corn"
In addition, at Emeril's Restaurant, there is a three-course lunch menu for $19.50 available any weekday, which the restaurant says it can serve up in 30 minutes.

AEG Live, a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival producer, put together the Michael Jackson This Is It tour, which sold out and was to start in London on July 13. This morning, AEG helped release a couple of photos from a June 23 rehearsal (above). Also, this morning, AEG is announcing that ticket buyers can get a refund, or keep a souvenir ticket. Ticket prices started at $105. Those opting for souvenirs, will have a choice of 8 designs. That's certainly an expensive and difficult to replicate novelty. (And the kind of opportunity the Post Office dreams of.) There was no announcement of plans to extend the tour to future-but-cancelled dates in case souvenir sales go well.
THE EVIL EYE!
As the summer begins, White House watchers have spotted a new look by President Obama: The Evil Eye!
Staffers have joked about the menacing glance, which comes when the president meets with world leaders who are not aligned with his progressive view.
White House photographers have captured the "evil eye" in recent weeks, during sessions with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Colombia's Alvaro Uribev.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi got hit with the commander's malocchio last week in the Oval office.
And at least one White House reporter has been on the receiving end of the daggers during a press conference.
Remember, this is developing ... so check back with
the Weekly World News Drudge later in the day for further terrifying updates.
