Benefit for Chef Mat Murphy this Sunday

The restaurant community has rallied around Ritz-Carlton executive chef Mat Murphy, who is still in Ochsner Hospital battling a streptococcus infection that led to toxic shock syndrome and DIC, a rare, life-threatening condition that prevents blood from clotting. More than 200 pints of blood have been donated in Murphy's name at various hospitals and blood drives, and Murphy's wife Alicia has been updating his progress at the couple's Web site (which had originally been set up to follow the lives of the couple's quadruplets). But the big push to help the Murphys takes place this Sunday, when more than 45 local and national chefs will be gathering at the Ritz-Carlton for a massive culinary endeavor and silent auction.

"We started the week at 350 tickets sold, and in the last 72 hours it's gone over 1,000," says Char Thian, who handles the hotel's public relations.

The event will also feature an onsite silent auction (autographed celebrity chef cookbooks! autographed Manning footballs! autographed Brees jersey! autographed Hannah Montana-bilia!) in conjunction with an online auction that includes stays in Ritz hotels around the world, among other luxe prizes -- more than 200 auction items in all.

The Murphy benefit will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sun. June 14 in two Ritz-Carlton ballrooms, and all funds will go toward Murphy's hospital bills and childcare to assist Alicia, who is pregnant with their fifth child. Tickets are only $65. For reservations, call (504) 670-2828.
