The Louisiana Legislatures Education Committee today soundly defeated, 7 to 1, HB 780 that would have required the LSU Board of Supervisors to have an approved financial plan before purchasing land for the proposed LSU/VA Hospital in Mid-City. Rep. Rick Nowlin, R-Natchitoches sponsored the bill, which had passed the full House earlier this month.
A number of organizations, including Save Charity Hospital and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, that have endorsed a competing plan to restore the old Charity Hospital had also supported Nowlins measure.

Actually watching the hearing was incredible. Sen. Jack Donahue excoriated LSU's "business plan" saying that it was a glorified power point presentation and that taking it to the bond markets would be a "waste of time." Yet he still refused to vote to recommend the bill to the full Senate. It was pathetic.
