French Market Says "Let Them Eat Cake" for Bastille Day Party

The French Market celebrates the heritage of its namesake nation this Sunday with a Bastille Day party in honor of the French national holiday.

Dubbed "Let Them Eat Cake!," the event begins at 2 p.m. and includes French-style Gypsy swing music, a public costume contests, free cake and a toast by actors portraying the French emperor Napoleon, the French heroine and martyr Joan of Arc and the French mime Marcel Marceau.

For the costume contest, people are invited to come dressed as their favorite French characters, "real or imagined, alive or dead, famous or infamous," says the press release. .

All the action happens at the Market Cafe at 1000 Decatur St., behind the Joan of Arc statue, the elegant landmark known to some locals a "Joanie on the Pony."

Here's the itinerary:

2 p.m., Music by Pierre Pichon Gypsy Swing Trio

2:30 p.m., Toast by Napoleon and Joan of Arc and sing-a-long to Le Marseillaise

3:00 p.m., "Let them eat cake!" Cake cutting and tasting for all

3:15 p.m., Costume contest; prizes include French Market gifts.
