Not Your Grandparents’ Exotic Dance

As a euphemism, “exotic dance” has proven to be fairly elastic. There was a time on Bourbon Street when it meant burlesque dancing, though now it seems to mean lap dances and pole work. The French Quarter hosts an extra taste of each tonight. Rick’s Sporting Saloon recently opened in the spot occupied by Big Daddy’s for four decades. It hosts a customer appreciation party tonight (get a free entry pass off it’s blog). It is owned by the creators of Rick’s Cabaret, which is across the street. Meanwhile, Bustout Burlesque offers two shows (8 p.m. & 10:30 p.m.) at the House of Blues, featuring it’s ensemble of revivalists, who favor 1950s style acts, as well as guests Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey (pictured). The touring Baltimore duo (aka Keri Burneston and Adam Krandle) play up a bit of a carny vibe with physical comedy and eccentric themes. Bustout’s regular dancer Perle Noire has also been on tour. She recently placed second in the Miss Exotic World pageant in Las Vegas, an event sponsored by the Burlesque Hall of Fame.
