Clap Your Hands Say Y'at

Posted By on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 3:55 PM

The frontman of the Brooklyn indie-rock band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is breaking out solo, but he won't be doing it alone. Alec Ounsworth, who shot to a sort of parabolic Internet fame after penning and self-releasing two overrated-then-underrated albums in the past five years, recorded his independent debut Mo Beauty in New Orleans and will release it on Anti- Records, Pitchfork's Amy Phillips reports. (The eclectic Los Angeles label is home to Neko Case, Tom Waits and Bettye LaVette.) Even more curious is the David Byrne-ish singer/songwriter's backing band, a second line of Crescent City all-stars including George Porter, Stanton Moore and Al "Carnival Time" Johnson. There is precedent for the odd pairing: Ounsworth has performed at multiple Tipitina's Musicians Bringing Musicians Home benefit concerts, last appearing here in May along with the MC5's Wayne Kramer, the Mekons' Jon Langford and, yes, Carnival Time himself. Le bon temps will roule on Oct. 20.
