Song 'birds

Posted by on Fri, Aug 14, 2009 at 10:36 PM

Gorgeous music alert: Raleigh, N.C., folkies Bowerbirds visit New Orleans for the first time tomorrow (10 p.m. at One Eyed Jacks; read Gambit’s preview here), bringing acoustic guitars, an accordion, an upright bass and a reputation for silencing large rooms of blabbing big-city showgoers. The group’s excellent 2007 debut Hymns For a Dark Horse seemed to earn more praise from critics, but after more than a few spins, I’m preferring the quiet dropkick of July's sophomore release Upper Air (Dead Oceans) — it’s softer, sweeter and somehow entirely more entrancing from start to finish. Have a listen:
