Project 30-90's shrinking footprint

Posted By on Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 10:57 PM

We admit it: Gambit staffers were skeptical upon first hearing Don Kelly Productions’ goal of a net-zero carbon footprint from its inaugural Project 30-90 music festival (2 p.m. Sat., Sept. 5). A few weeks ago I rang Kelly for a feature in "Green Matters," and the skepticism was supplanted by concrete plans and Kelly’s contagious enthusiasm. Well, the skepticism returns this week with news that the festival, which was scheduled to be the first event at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s Festival Park (1400 Tchoupitoulas St.), has been moved around the corner to River City Plaza at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World (1380 Port of New Orleans Place). Asked for an explanation, a representative from Bond PR said Festival Park became "impractical for several reasons," but failed to provide any. (She did reassure us that all the green initiatives Kelly discussed in the interview are still on track.) Sadly, as a result of the now-single-stage setup, semiheadliners the Von Bondies were dropped from the bill, and the ticket(less) price has been lowered accordingly, from $35 to $30. Even sadder for the VBs, the world now knows the precise value placed on the Detroit rock band (previously and ignominiously known as Jack White’s punching bag):

UPDATE: This post originally mentioned an erroneous press release, sent to Gambit Monday night by Vice Marketing, that contained the old festival location and said nothing of the aforementioned changes. Bond PR and Don Kelly Productions have confirmed that the "rogue" release was not authorized by either organization, and they advise recipients to disregard it.
