BOUSTANY HAS GOP RESPONSE: President Barack Obama is scheduled to address the joint session of Congress tonight regarding health reform at 7 pm (carried on most networks). Louisiana Rep. Charles Boustany, a surgeon, will provide the Republican response immediately afterward. House Minority Leader John Boehner hails the choice, saying ""Dr. Boustany has been a tireless advocate for reform that lowers health care costs and expands access for the American people at a price our nation can afford. He understands why Washington, as Democrats have proposed, should never get between a doctor and his patient."
BUT HOLD!: Boehner this afternoon:
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) defended the pick of Rep. Charles Boustany (R-La.) to deliver tonight's GOP rebuttal to President Obama -- saying he knew nothing of Boustany's apparent flirtation with the birther movement.
"I'm not familiar with it at all," said Boehner, referring to video in which Boustany says "I think there are questions" about Obama's birth certificate.
THE GREENING OF THE NEW ORLEANS FOOD CHAIN: The Nation looks at the new spate of farmers' markets and community gardens in New Orleans:
Federal failures forced this ethic of self-reliance onto the city. Today, however, the question of where to find fresh food is no longer whispered along a community grapevine. More often than not, the answer is blooming in plain sight, from a bed in one of dozens of neighborhood gardens and microfarms that dot the blighted cityscape. These victory gardens for the twenty-first century produce no butter but rather fruits and vegetables that may yet change the future of American agriculture.
