John Georges hasn't officially come out and said that he's running for mayor -- he came just barely shy of saying so on the radio -- but considering his actions of late, you could pretty much count on it. See that picture up there? That's Georges with Jazzfest founder Quint Davis (far left in white jacket) on the back of a car at the head of the Young Olympia 125th Anniversary Second Line back on Sunday. See that bag Georges is holding in his lap? Well they were full of these:

He was also handing out plastic cups and Mardi Gras beads with the same slogans on them. Oh, and GeorgesforMayor.com has been booked, meaning somebody (probably Georges) has bought the rights to the URL and is creating a site for it.

We were there filming second line footage for our brass band documentary and noticed Georges handing out the trinkets. With all the people that were out on Sunday (not sure on the actual count but it had to be in the thousands) I can't think of a better grassroots effort than giving out plastic cups at a second line -- most of which were promptly filled with booze.

Now far be it from me, a humble sports and entertainment writer, to do any political prognosticating. But when someone who has already run for governor of Louisiana is talking about his possible platform on the radio on one day and is then handing out "Georges for Mayor" trinkets on the next, it's a good chance that that person is most likely running for mayor. Official announcement or not.

Oh, and it always helps to have a guy like Quint Davis on your side. That should keep people from making any references to Tommy Carcetti from "The Wire" (though he did become Mayor of Baltimore and then Governor, so that may not be a bad thing).

more importantly (or ominously) than Quint Davis is the guy in that middle: NO East political operative Sherman Copeland. I'll let the audience do the math... On another note, I went to a political Black tie soiree last weekend with a White elected official (I'm Black). John Georges turned and looked at us shocked, then walked over and whispered to her loud enough for me to hear "So you DO have Black friends!" This political wannabe is a wreck. He could no more manage this city than Foghorn Leghorn. Actually, Foghorn would probably do a better job.
Let me get this straight. Georges - who has bought and paid for Sherman's help in delivering the black vote in exchange for God knows what -- is handing out yellow....shackles? with his name on them? to the black vote that Sherman is counting on to be too ignorant and uneducated to realize that Georges has been a Republican all his life and has done nothing to help a single regular person his entire life? Seriously? Is this a Simpson's episode in real life?
Red, thanks for pointing out the politically obvious -- but we should forgive Alejandro, who is a sports guy and not a political writer. BTW, the name is spelled Copelin, not Copeland. He's the former Ninth Ward kingpin who admitted under oath in the early 1970s (to a federal grand jury, no less) that he took $50K in bribes while leading the Model Cities program at City Hall. Copelin got immunity from the feds for flipping on Dr. Joe Beasley, who went to the pen. Copelin never recovered from the scandal, though he did serve several terms in the state House of Reps and has tried to rehabilitate his image as a businessman in eastern N.O., where he does enjoy some clout in business affairs (except he couldn't get more than one council vote last week against the Plaza TIF project.) His main problem is that he cannot stay away from politics, which was the source of his bad rep and the reason many folks still don't trust him. He has been poison to most campaigns since he lost his House seat, but Georges seems committed to him as his lead dog in the black community. (That's the role Copelin played in Georges' run for governor in 2007, a race in which he ran first in N.O.) It will be interesting to see what Georges' opponents do with this photo, and with Georges' comments in the TP last weekend, when he rhetorically embraced Copelin.
@Clancy: People should always forgive me when I write about Louisiana politics - my brain starts to hemorrhage every time I try to decipher any of it.
@Clancy...I'll be sure to wrangle up some additional photos of the two for George's opponents....on one condition, haha. Which mayoral candidate will need a fantastic personal photographer? Greg Rhoades - The new Bernardo?
This man is a joke! He is too rich to care about people! Why would he want to become mayor? He has everything he could want and he still wants power! it will not get him respect. I wonder how many 0's he paid Copeland to sit in a convertible passing out cheap plastic token cups.
IF GEORGES RUNS AND WINS, IT JUST SHOWS HOW IGNORANT THE AVERAGE VOTER IS. EVEN BEING SEEN IN PUBLIC WITH THAT WEASEL, COPELIN, SHOULD BE THE ULTIMATE KISS OF DEATH. PRESIDENT HUSSEIN WITH REV. WRIGHT AND GEORGES WITH COPELIN SHOULD TRIGGER A MAJOR ALARM. JUDGE A PERSON BY THE COMPANY THEY KEEP. HAAAAY N.O. PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR BUTTS!!! DON'T LET THIS MAN BUY THE MAYOR'S OFFICE. VOTE FOR THE MOST QUALIFIED NOT SKIN COLOR.
