In Nov. 2002, New Orleanian Christie Buckner wrote a Gambit cover story about her diagnosis and battle with ovarian cancer. Buckner died last Thursday at the age of 39 after a nine-year struggle with the disease, which is the fifth leading cancer killer among American women. We've had several inquiries about republishing or making Christie's essay available to family, friends and the public. You can find it here.

I understand your loss of your love one. Please take comfort in knowing she's no longer in pain and in Gods hand.

she was a good friend of mine who I had difficulty getting in touch with after Katrina. My condolences and thoughts to her family. - Melinda

I knew Christie. She was a warm, funny, smart, vibrant woman. I met her at the OCNA conference in New Orleans in 2003, and a few years later I came back just to visit her. Such a fighter. I won't forget her.
