Sandbagging Bayou St. John

Posted by Kevin Allman on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 6:51 PM

As of noon, crews were out sandbagging Bayou St. John on Jefferson Davis Parkway at Lafitte Street in (in front of the Mid-City post office). No street flooding, but the waterline was exactly at the bayou's top and slopping over in some places.

Eric Hartman, who lives at the nearby American Can Co., was out taking photographs as the water lapped over the bayou's banks. "I've lived on the bayou all my life," said Hartman, "and I've never seen it like this."

S&WB and the Levee Board should have gotten their act together over the weekend, after the last heavy rain. From what I understand they didn't open the valves until mid-day yesterday, too late to drain the bloated bayou before this round of rains. According to someone in the FSJ neighborhood association, nobody even answered the 'emergency' phone lines. Pretty disturbing stuff, and someone's going to get plenty water in their houses because of their incompetence.

Bayou St. John was high the last few weeks before all the rain. Do tell us again, for what purpose did the ACoE blocked the lake end of this waterway? To flood Esplanade Ridge like the rest of the city?

W.T.F.? From the noa.com mid-city forum : 7859. sandbag thief by annemay, 12/15/09 15:12 ET went to walk dog at Bayou St John..S&W Board had put sandbags out to stop flooding at the Hagan end, but now the barrier has a 6 ft. gap as some jerk stole the sandbags. So if you know a caucasian male, brown hair probably mid forties who drives an older dark green Dodge truck and now has sandbags call the 1st Dist. PD
