BaBa Blankets (1330 Prytania St., 599-4520), a social enterprise group that sells colorful Ghanan blankets and textiles, is now offering a special gift for the holidays: ba-ba-baskets (no, they don't officially refer to the baskets that way, but I couldn't resist).
Like all of Baba Blanket's products, the $55 baskets are hand-made by a collective of formerly economically disadvantaged Ghanan women. Proceeds benefit SISTAthe Stay-in-School Tuition Assistance program, which helps rural Ghanan girls complete their secondary school educations. In addition, the business provides sustainable income and a viable skill set for many women who would otherwise be stuck in menial, often physically demanding jobs.
Pick up one of these sturdy, vibrant baskets in violet, mango, chili or fuschia at the Happy Hour Shopping Saloon on Friday, Dec. 18 at BaBa Blankets from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m and savor wine, live music and hors d'oeuvres by local chef Anne Churchill while you shop. Shoppers who can't make it to the Happy Hour event will miss out on Churchill's chicken sate and ratatouille, but they can still take advantage of the website's free shipping offer: from now until Dec. 18, enter the coupon code SHIPBASKETS to receive free shipping on your entire order.
