I object! I object! Are these people doing this not from NO? That is absolutely not in the spirit of Mardi Gras. I could care less about the trucks in legal parking spaces, but staking out positions, and "claiming" them over a week in advance. Have these people never enjoyed staying out in their spot all night? Do they not realize, there's no such thing as "claiming" your spot in space. Your spot is where you stand, people. Someone needs to go through and hydro-seed that neutral ground the day before the parade. Now to ladders. OY VEY! People, BACK the ladders off the curb. You don't like when extraordinarily tall people stand intentionally in front of you, do you? Back them up 10' and your kid can still catch beads. Wait, I mean, you can catch them, and hand them up. Ladders are the tallest thing out there, they need not be on the front row. Save that for kids on foot.

James, it is no longer an environment to calmly walk up on Friday, lay out a couple of lawn chairs and a card, then proceed to chat with all your neighbors. There are plenty of folks that used to come into the hood from out of town or from the burbs. Consider this a defensive stance of a sort. If the immediate residents make some effort, they are literally shut out. Offer me a permit. Make the marks completely irrelevant. Show me a better way, and we shall follow. But in the immediate term, we, the humble neighbors of City Park, will stand our ground. But feel free to come have a beer with us Friday night.

This is exactly why I would rather catch Endymion downtown or skip it all together. Walking to the uptown parades is so much easier and more enjoyable than dealing with that craziness.
