Symposium on Southern Food with Oxford American Writers

Posted By on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 9:00 PM

The Oxford American magazine is coming to town this weekend as part of a promotional tour for its Southern food issue, hosting a free symposium on food writing and a high-dollar fundraiser for the magazine itself.

John T. Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, edited this special edition of the Southern cultural magazine, which includes pieces by Times-Picayune restaurant critic Brett Anderson, former Times-Picayune columnist Lolis Eric Elie and former Gambit restaurant critic Sara Roahen, among many others.

The events start on Friday with a benefit dinner at Domenica, chef John Besh's regional Italian restaurant. Dinner is $500 per person with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit that publishes The Oxford American.

The following day, April 17, the Southern Food & Beverage Museum hosts a public symposium on the magazine's food issue, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with talks from Edge, The Oxford American editors and contributing writers. There's a reception at 5 p.m., when the museum will dedicate the refurbished, historic bar from Bruning's, a West End restaurant destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Painstakingly rebuilt, the bar is now an exhibit at the museum and on Saturday afternoon it will be put to use serving drinks to the symposium and reception crowd.

Saturday's events are free and open to the public. More details on all magazine's local events are here.
