BP protest: Sun., May 30, 1 pm, Jackson Square

Posted by Kevin Allman on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 7:45 PM

There's growing anger at both BP and the federal government regarding the Gulf oil catastrophe; three-quarters of Americans think that BP has muffed the response and -- are you listening, President Obama? -- a slim majority think the Obama administration has done the same. Now an ad hoc group called Murdered Gulf has announced a formal protest to take place this Sunday at 1 p.m. in Jackson Square, demanding the government do more. Who is behind this Murdered Gulf, you ask?

This event is being put together by a handful pissed-off New Orleanians… it is not a political action committee, community group or activist organization although we absolutely WELCOME and INVITE anyone and everyone to join us!

PLEASE spread the word… come and bring as many as you can!

We will have legal observers on-hand to deal with any police problems (although we don’t expect any).

There will also be speakers and media present.

That's all we know now; more as it comes out.

I want to protest BP, but not if I'm going to find myself in a crowd with a bunch of anarcho-boys wearing kerchiefs over their faces, priming to beat down people in suits or perceived shareholders, or some other stupid stunt ala the harrassment of Brennan's workers at the conservative convention back in April. If anyone has some clear information on who this group is, and what their plans are, please, share!

What harrassment of Brennan's workers?

Hey Beth, I'm not 100% clear on your concerns... but rest assured the only reason for the organizers being a little bit sub-rosa is that some of the people doing this have day jobs that frown on political activity. . This is not an anarchist action... Quite the contrary, it's a call for the federal government to directly, immediately intervene and STOP the BP Oil Flood... . ...and hopefully also a way for many of us who are sick and miserable about the BP Oil Flood to feel less helpless and at least show the media and world that the people of the Gulf CARE about what's being done to us,and are tired of excuses from BP. . All that said, we hope anarcho-boys and -girls do show up, as well as church groups, tea partyers, liberals, pirates, suit-wearing office workers, waitstaff, and all other residents of all ages and whatever affiliation. . Hope to see you Sunday!

Thanks for the response, MG. That answers my concerns.

I think the cleanup needs to get in the hands of The State of Louisiana. We're the only ones who really give two cents about our coast.

Must read! They already knew that the rig was unsafe BEFORE the blowout and did NOTHING about it? http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/Grijalva%20MMS%20ltr.pdf
