Gambit Video: Asking David Simon, Lolis Elie et al. their favorite depiction of New Orleans

Posted by Alejandro de los Rios on Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 10:08 PM

We were at the Frank's Place screening last week at NOCCA and caught up with some of the writers of Treme (notably, David Simon and Lolis Elie) as well as Tim Reid (who played Frank and is plays a judge in Treme) and a few others to get their thoughts on their favorite depictions of New Orleans in TV and film.

Just a couple of notes:

  • I was really hoping someone would say "that episode of the Simpsons where Chief Wiggum moves to New Orleans and becomes a private eye" but, alas, no one did. (Probably because Wiggum and Principal Skinner shoot up Tipitina's in that episode for no discernible reason).
  • David Simon, who has seemingly built a reputation for being sort of surly, was nothing but gracious and amicable. Though we did have a camera in his face so it's not like I was expecting him to punch us out.
  • Lolis Elie was probably the sharpest dresser at the whole event.
  • Liberty's Kitchen catered the event and the food was ridiculously good (read about them here and here)

Anyone who has tried to make an easy living the hard way in this city, by playing poker or other hustling means, has to appreciate the New Orleans of "The Cincinnati Kid."

@ Kevin - I know! I'm not sure if that counted in people's mind because it wasn't actually set in New Orleans. ...though the Simpsons did have to apologize for that:http://bartsblackboard.com/i-will-not-defame-new-orleans/season-4/182/

Hey, The Simpsons' mention of NOLA as the "Sodom and Gomorrah of the Mighty Mississipp" is pretty much on-target.
