America's "neighbors"???

Posted by Kevin Allman on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 1:09 AM

Transcript: Obama's Remarks on BP Oil Spill:

I'd like to lay out for you what our battle plan is going forward: what we're doing to clean up the oil, what we're doing to help our neighbors in the Gulf, and what we're doing to make sure that a catastrophe like this never happens again.

It is a faith in the future that sustains us as a people. It is that same faith that sustains our neighbors in the Gulf right now.

... ?

Neighbors?

Are we Canada?

Are we Mexico?

Thought we were all Americans down here ....

He didn't say "American neighbors." He said neighbors. When you read that part in the Bible that said "love thy neighbor" did you presume God meant "Canadians"?

Let's clarify the context of Obama's statement. Obama is speaking in religious terms: "It's a FAITH in the future that sustains us as a people. It is that same FAITH that sustains our neighbors in the Gulf right now. Each year, at the beginning of shrimping season, the region's fishermen take part in a tradition that was brought to America long ago by fishing immigrants from Europe. It's called "The Blessing of the Fleet," and today it's a celebration where clergy from different religions gather to say a prayer for the safety and success of the men and women who will soon head out to sea -- some for weeks at a time. The ceremony goes on in good times and in bad. It took place after Katrina, and it took place a few weeks ago -- at the beginning of the most difficult season these fishermen have ever faced. And still, they came and they prayed. For as a priest and former fisherman once said of the tradition, "The blessing is not that God has promised to remove all obstacles and dangers. The blessing is that He is with us always," a blessing that's granted "even in the midst of the storm." The oil spill is not the last crisis America will face. This nation has known hard times before and we will surely know them again. What sees us through -- what has always seen us through -- is our strength, our resilience, and our unyielding faith that something better awaits us if we summon the courage to reach for it. Tonight, we pray for that courage. We pray for the people of the Gulf. And we pray that a hand may guide us through the storm towards a brighter day. Thank you, God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America." Emphasis on the word "faith" is mine. The use of the word neighbor here is a religious connotation as I mentioned above: "Love thy neighbor." The concept of neighbor has deep roots in biblical theology. You might read this: http://www.urbana.org/complete-book-of-everyday-christianity/neighborhood Put the words "neighbor" and "christianity" in your google search box and see how many hits you get: I got 1,400,000 results. Since Obama is speaking in a religious context here, he is giving religious motive to doing the right thing by helping those of us who live in the gulf states. He's also speaking directly to believers in this region by discussing religion and faith in this address. I am going to give some not so Christianly worded advice to you Kevin. Try not being such a prickly butthole, and try to realize that maybe the whole world isn't out to beat up on Louisiana. I thought his speech was fine.

At any rate it is not a damn fine day in this neighborhood, and we need all the help we can get. I just hope Obama has the cojones to do what needs to be done, 'cause few people in all of this have hesitated to even think of growing a pair.

Liprap, What is it exactly that you think Obama needs cojones to do? Aside from having BP drawn & quartered.

Would he have said "our neighbors in Nantucket"? I think not. This is just as bad as W referring to us as being in "that part of the world. We are separate. And not quite equal.

We are an inconvenience to him. An annoyance that he had to cancel his trip abroad for. The one that really pisses me off is when he says Louisiana's land is "resilient". No, it is NOT! The people are, but the LAND isn't. The land is so damn fragile it's painful! His attitude about this could not convey "I don't give a shit" more if he tried.

IDO NOT SEE A RELIGIOUS SENSE OBAMA THE CITED IN TEXT OF THIS NOTE. IT ONLY REFERRED TO COUNTRY NEIGHBORS NEIGHBORS UNITED STATES (WHICH MAY BE AFFECTED BY OIL SPILL) IN THIS CASE MEXICO AND CANADA AND IT REFERRED TO MEXICO AND CANADA TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES THE PROBLEM RESOLVED . I think that OBAMA is taking responsibility for what happened, and this is as it should.
