Abita Beer debuts Abita S.O.S. — A Charitable Pilsner

Posted by Alex Woodward on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 11:11 PM

Abita Brewing Company always seems to have the right brew for the worst times. There's always the standby, the reliable Amber, to nurse you in a dirty bar when you're in the dumps. Then there's Strawberry Lager to reward you at the end of a stressful post-season football game and unpredictable spring weather. Restoration Ale continues to shine a light (and donate money to) hurricane relief following Hurricane Katrina. Abbey Ale helps out its neighbor on the Northshore, the St. Joseph's Abbey in Covington.

Now, as the Gulf seems to be swallowed whole by BP's oil disaster, the Abita Springs-based brewery debuts S.O.S. — A Charitable Pilsner. (S.O.S. = "Save Our Shore") The brewery will donate 75 cents from every bottle sold as part of the brew's companion campaign, S.O.S. — A Charitable Fund, administered by the Northshore Community Foundation.
“Abita S.O.S. is a message in a bottle. It is a distress signal we’re sending out all across the 41 states where Abita is sold. It is going to raise awareness and money,” says Abita president David Blossman in a company statement.

There's also merchandise: Hats, shirts, stickers, with 100 percent of the net proceeds benefiting the fund. The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board will help the brewery contribute its funds where help is most needed.

Start drooling (from Abita's S.O.S. website, which you should definitely check out):

This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.
