If your New Year’s resolutions include cleaning out closets, saving money or becoming more eco-friendly by recycling everything possible — or even if you made no resolutions but think these are good things to do — there is a clothing swap in Mandeville to help you get started.
Swap.com — which helps people across the country trade their books, games, movies and CDs for different ones — proposed a National Swap Day, and the local Ruffian Swap will host one for trading women’s fashions on Saturday, Jan. 22, at The Beach House (124 Girod St., Mandeville, 985-624-9331; ). To participate, bring a bag of like-new clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories to The Beach House between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., participants can fill a bag with items other women have brought to swap.
Items to be traded don’t have to bear designer labels, but must be fashionable, on trend and laundered. Those items will be sorted and laid out on tables or hung on racks for swappers to browse.
Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door, but there is no additional cost for the fashion items you choose.
Ruffian Swap, a partnership between style blogger Rachael LaRoche (www.ordinarilyurbane.com) and fashion show and style events planner Nicholas Landry (Nicholas Landry Events and NOLA Renaissance), has hosted several fashion swapping events in the New Orleans area, starting in August 2010.
LaRoche says her goal is to hold a swap event every month to introduce women in the area to the concept of trading clothes before they go shopping for new apparel.
Swap.com, which deals in small items such as books, movies, video games and CDs through an Internet site, matches people who have items they want to get rid of with traders looking for that merchandise. Organizers say the average cost for shipping and handling is about $3.50. Since it started, Swap.com says it has facilitated 1.8 million trades, saving members $11.6 million and reducing their carbon footprint by 10.5 million pounds. It is sponsoring the first National Swap Day Jan.22, with events planned in more than 15 cities across the country, including the one hosted by Ruffian Swap on the Northshore.
