Chef Jimmy Corwell is out at Le Foret, the ultra-ambitious CBD restaurant he helped open about 16 months ago. The chef says he was fired earlier this week following disagreements with Le Foret’s owners over the restaurant’s future direction.
“It was a sudden kind of thing, and really now I’m just trying to regroup and figure out what’s next,” says Corwell.
Le Foret general manager Danny Millan says a pair of chefs who previously worked under Corwell are now running the kitchen and that management is presently interviewing for the head chef position.
“We should know more in a few weeks,” Millan says.
An Atlanta native, Corwell carries the rare professional designation of certified master chef. He was previously chef at the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant, a Napa Valley teaching restaurant run by the Culinary Institute of America. He made his New Orleans debut at Le Foret when it opened in October 2009 and soon began garnering critical praise (including my review in January 2010).
Corwell says he’s now "looking for the next opportunity," and says he hopes it will be one that keeps him in New Orleans.
“I’ve had a great time here in New Orleans for sure, and I enjoyed the experience of opening Le Foret, introducing its style to people and building its name here,” he says.
