The Jackeens over in Dublin are working hard loading the Black Stuff to make sure there’s enough Guinness for Finn McCool’s Irish Pub’s St. Patrick’s Day hooley — and one of them could be yours.

Janey Mack! Instead of foostering through the early days of March, pull up your socks, exercise your napper and write a short story that ties into St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. You could win the grand prize of a keg — more than 100 pints — of Guinness.

There are a few rules: The short story must be 500 to 1,000 words long, can be poetry or prose, and must contain the following words: believe, relic, buzz, shake-weight, barrel, Jameson, Kilwilkie, balls, cult and banks. There is a $1 entry fee and you must hand in your masterpiece at the Mid-City bar (3701 Banks Street) by noon on March 11.

Ian McNulty (Gambit’s restaurant critic and author of the books Louisiana Rambles and A Season of Night) and Stephen Rea, author of Finn McCool’s Football Club — The Birth, Death, and Resurrection of a Pub Soccer Team in the City of the Dead, will serve as judges, and the winning story will be read aloud at Finn McCool’s on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17).

Even if you don’t win, your words will be bound into a book that will be sold at the bar, with proceeds benefiting charity.

This St. Patrick’s Day is special for Finn McCool’s owner Stephen Patterson, a native of Northern Ireland, who reopened the bar after Hurricane Katrina on March 17 five years ago. To celebrate that and St. Patrick’s Day, Patterson not only will have a reading of the winning entry but also will hold a block party with free food, Irish karaoke and “Irish Olympics” featuring games using potatoes and cabbages. Rea also will sign copies of his book.

For more information about the writing contest, contact Patterson at 251-6620.
