Good news, Louisiana comics fans: Showtime just bought the script for a half-hour police comedy based on Chew, the acclaimed Image comics series illustrated by Lafayette native Rob Guillory and written by John Layman.

Stephen Hopkins is set to direct and executive produce, with Circle Of Confusion (the team behind AMC's acclaimed comic adaptation of The Walking Dead). Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer wrote the script.

Chew follows a "cibopathic" (or "food psychic") detective named Tony Chu investigating a series of murders and mysteries in the midst of a chicken prohibition.

In Gambit's interview with Guillory for our December 2010 cover story "Meet the Panelists," following the works of Louisiana comics artists, Guillory said his first pick for the character Chu is Lost actor Ken Leung. "We've been in pretty regular contact with him and he knows we want him for the role," he said.

Chew earned a prestigious Eisner Award and its first two issues made the New York Times bestseller list. Find it at Crescent City Comics (4916 Freret St.), More Fun Comics (8200 Oak St.) and BSI Comics (3030 Severn Ave., Metairie).
