Show to benefit Krewe of Eris arrestees

Following the New Orleans Police Department clash with a Mardi Gras walking krewe in the Marigny last month, the Krewe of Eris has set up a legal fund for 12 members arrested that night. (You can find accounts here and here, too.)

The krewe hosts a benefit concert 10 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at the AllWays Lounge (2240 St. Claude Ave.) with Ratty Scurvics, Tuba Skinny, Slow Danger Brass Band and Sweet Street Symphony.

The six-year-old krewe faced Tasers, pepper spray, and in one video, an NOPD officer smacks a camera out of a bystander's hand. Some witnesses and neighbors say some marchers vandalized cars and broke property. An NOPD statement said 12 of the marchers were arrested and six officers were hurt. NOPD's public integrity bureau and independent police monitor Susan Hutson have each opened investigations.

A support letter on the krewe's Eris12.org website reads, "None of the arrestees went to Eris looking for trouble. Many of us are longtime residents of New Orleans, homeowners, and members of the city's downtown arts community. We are professional musicians, artists, trades people and schoolteachers. Eris was not and never has been a protest march, riot, or political movement. As the countless brave witnesses who have stepped forward agree, it was simply a big, happy, weird parade. If a few bad apples took the parade as an opportunity for hooliganism, we deplore that, but nothing justifies the rabid NOPD attacks on innocent parade participants."

Donations also can be made on the website. The krewe's legal support is provided by the law offices of Miles W. Swanson.
